Ravinjaya, Indonesia: On The Way

It might not strike day to day,
But dare we not say.

That we have dedicated our lives,
To achieve a goal that we know we can strive,

It is a process. Understand,
And know that everyone is on their own piece of land.

Steps to the summit, it is no race,
But simply something you do at your own pace.

After all, we are doing the same thing,
Impurities can't go away in an eye blink.

We all have different tests to take,
Each of them ready to give us the much needed shake.

But never fail to remember,
Everyone have different degrees of surrender.

H.H. Devamrita Swami: Finding Your Real Self in Kirtan

Who am I, anyway? Hope you don't mind, but sometimes I like to swim the deep end of the pool. The question: Can kirtan take us all the way Home, into Krishna's company? What happens after kirtan, in this lifetime, sufficiently rids the heart of dirt, accumulated over many past lifetimes?

On the disappearance-day celebration of my grand spiritual master, param-guru Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur, the divine preceptor of our ISKCON founder-acarya, Srila Prabhupada, I mediated on Srila Bhaktisiddhanta's poem Dusta-Mana.

Singling out pseudo-devotees who abandon the public kirtan, retiring into solitude so they can reap worldly adoration by profiling themselves as a highly advanced, the poem, though penned at least eight decades ago, is still relevant today. Show-bottle, prime-time spiritualists still abound, both in India and the West.

"O wicked mind! What kind of Vaishnava do you think you are? Your pretentious show of chanting Lord Hari's name in a solitary place is only for the sake of attaining the false prestige of a worldly reputation—it is nothing but pure hypocrisy."

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta goes on to explain that the glory of chanting Krishna's names and kirtan is not meant to fuel the materialistic fire of recognition and reputation. Such ambitions, he says, coat the chanter with pig's defecation. The proper motivation and its expression: "Preach in order to give life to the walking corpses of the mundane world."

Then the loudest of hints, given in the poem's nineteenth and final verse, clearly lights the path advanced chanting will take you:

"This humble servant of Radha and and Her beloved Krishna always hopes for kirtan, and he begs all to loudly sing the names of Lord Hari. The transcendental power of congregational chanting automatically awakens remembrance of the Lord and His divine pastimes in relation to one's own eternal spiritual form. Only at that time does it become possible to go off to a solitary place and engage in the confidential worship of Their Lordships."

This most luminous gem from Srila Bhaktisiddhanta reminds me of a beautiful verse in the Bhagavatam (2.8.5):

"The sound incarnation of Lord Krishna, the Supreme Soul [i.e. Srimad-Bhagavatam], enters into the heart of a self-realized devotee, sits on the lotus flower of his loving relationship, and thus cleanses the dust of material association, such as lust, anger and hankering. Thus it acts like autumnal rains upon pools of muddy water."

In the purport Srila Prabhupada reveals how hearing and chanting about Krishna works at the advanced stage:

"By sincere efforts to hear Srimad-Bhagavatam, one realizes his constitutional relationship with the Lord in the transcendental humor of servitude, friendship, paternal affection or conjugal love, and by such self-realization one becomes situated at once in the transcendental loving service of the Lord. Not only were all the pure devotees like Narada self-realized souls, but they were engaged in preaching work automatically by spiritual impetus, and thus they delivered many poor souls entangled in the material modes. They became so powerful because they sincerely followed the Bhagavatam principles by regular hearing and worshiping. By such actions the accumulated material lusts, etc., become cleansed by the personal endeavor of the Lord within the heart."

So worry not, fret not, about what looms ahead, far away though it seems. Cultivation of the Holy Name and the Bhagavatam, intensified by publicly distributing them, will take us all the way to our original relationship with Krishna.

H.H. Kadamba Kanana Swami: It starts with attraction…

(Kadamba Kanana Maharaja, 10 December 2011, Drakensburg, SA)

Krsna consciousness is not just something that happens over night, it’s not just something that you do all at once but it’s a step by step process. I think that’s really a key element and I think that sometimes we want to jump instead of the step by step idea. Of course some jumping is needed and we cannot go to slow also because we have to keep a goal in mind.

In spiritual life we have three major stages and the first stage is the connection stage, the second stage is the purification stage and then you get the ecstasy stage, the ultimate goal. This is known as sambandha, abhideya and prayojana. These are essential elements in spiritual life and one has to understand this. We are seeing that our acaryas have installed the Deities of Madana-Mohan, Sri Sri Radha Govinda and of Gopinatha. And mantras have been dedicated by Krsnadas Kaviraja to these various Deities. It is describing how Madana-Mohan is attracting. Madana-Mohan is Krsna’s form of attracting the devotees and that is the beginning- sambandha. So it’s interesting how it all begins with attraction. And that’s true; it begins with attractions and doesn’t begin with regulative principles because they come after we have sort of initially attracted. So attraction is the basis of Krsna consciousness and that is a fact. Therefore we should take some time to have a good time in Krsna consciousness.

Spiritual Scientist: Humility opens the door to wisdom

The Bhagavad-gita (13.8) mentions humility as the first among the twenty virtues that comprise wisdom. This indicates that humility is the doorway that enables us to enter the house of wisdom. Humility activates our awareness that, no matter how much we know, there is so much more to know. This humble awareness catalyzes within us an untiring willingness, even eagerness, to learn, which in turn makes us constantly receptive to hear the inner voice of God. This divine voice guides our sights and thoughts so that our daily experiences serve to confirm the wisdom that we have learnt in the revealed scriptures.

Thus, humility transforms our life into a dynamic educational experience that reinforces our scriptural learning and deepens our spiritual wisdom.

H.H. Kadamba Kanana Swami: Revealing something extraordinary!

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Mayapur, November 2011) Lecture – Caitanya-caritamrta

Lord Caitanya with everyone was revealing something extraordinary! For example, with Haridasa he said:

“Do you remember Haridasa when they were taking you to the market place and when they were whipping you? Do you remember Haridasa?”

“Yes, of course I remember.”

“Do you remember, Haridasa how you didn’t feel any pain?”

“Yes I remember.”

“Well Haridasa, you know when actually these guys were whipping you, I was coming down from the spiritual world with my Sudarsana cakra, and I was going to cut the hands of these culprits, but then you started praying…..my Lord please forgive them….then what could I do? Okay, so I didn’t kill them, but then I put my back over your back and it is I who took all that beating on my back!”

Lord Caitanya turned around and his back was full of whipping marks!

Haridasa fainted in shock. Like this He was showing many things in the ‘Nadiya Prakash lila’. In Advaita Acarya’s case there was a story about a verse in the Bhagavad Gita:

sarvataḥ pāṇi-pādaṁ tat
sarvato ’kṣi-śiro-mukham
sarvataḥ śrutimal loke
sarvam āvṛtya tiṣṭhati’, (BG.13.14)

“Everywhere are His hands and legs, His eyes heads and faces, and He has ears everywhere. In this way the Supersoul exists, pervading everything”.

So if you look at the verse in sanskrit, it doesn’t really say the Supersoul. In the translation the Supersoul is there but not in sanksrit, since it is nowhere to be found. Advaita Acarya was puzzled by this verse. He was doing the daily lecture from the Bhagavad Gita, and had difficulty in explaining this verse in devotional context.

Sometimes it happened to him when he had some difficulty with the verse and then Advaita Acarya became very upset, because he didn’t want to find any fault with the Gita, but only with his own explanations, and would fast until he knew it. At night Lord Caitanya would appear in his dream and say:

“Please don’t fast. You do not need to fast!”

And then Lord Caitanya would be giving the explanation, and in this way he was instructed by Lord Caitanya, particularly on this verse!

Mucukunda das, AU/NZ: "An unanalysed life is not worth living"

Today the vast majority of people are trying to this statement of Plato wrong. If they were honest about their disposition they might even say “why analyse when we have these bodies?, let’s just enjoy with the body!” but what about those who are more intelligent?, they can’t be happy just blindly pursueing the animalistic propensities of eating, sleeping, mating and defending.

For them this is Living a lie, living in illusion by acting as though were just a bag of senses! What about them? Should they supress there philisophical inclination, their love for wisdom? Are they crazy. If human life is not meant to be lived analytically or introspectively  then that means philosophers or bhakti yogis are mad.

One persons poison is another’s nectar so just because one person advocates that life is for enjoying materially and Ignorance is bliss, live in the moment, it’s all good, just be happy and don’t hurt any one, just do good deeds and don’t worry too much etc. does that mean everyone should follow that standard of life?

No. The yogis say sense gratifiers are mad in the true sense of the term. madness means to do the same thing over and over again and optimistically expect a different result.

So one persons day is anothers night. These days it’s fashionable to say “be optimistic, positive thinking, law of attraction etc. But why are there people who are famous and remembered for hundreds of years or more just for pointing out the faults of materialism? It would seem that pessimists are more appreciated in the long run. For example buddha taught two things and two things only - how to not suffer and how to not give suffering to others.
Krsna says in the Gita: “O son of Kuntī, the nonpermanent appearance of happiness and distress, and their disappearance in due course, are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons. They arise from sense perception, O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed.

So this theme in spiritual teachings is there because the teachers know the psychology of the unrealistic optimists. The unrealistic optimists or the materialist workers are in so much illusion that they don’t even know their on illusion. Like some whose been wearing sunglasses for so long that they forget because weve adapted to that vision so it’s normal, this is like our conditioned life. We conditioned to think it’s normal to be bound by conditions.

Therefore the great souls find it proper to give an introduction to our own situation before teaching us the spiritual situation.

Maybe we could take some inspiration from these transcendental autocrats.

Krsna the self sufficient philosopher doesn’t just point out the faults though. he is more positive. He teaches how to analyse our sticky situation in the limited realm of matter only so we can see the  need to go beyond it.

O best among men [Arjuna], the person who is not disturbed by happiness and distress and is steady in both is certainly eligible for liberation.
Bhagavad gita 2:15

Celebrating 45th Gita Jayanti Festival at ISKCON
15/12/2011 08:15

The FINANCIAL -- International Society for Krishna Consciousness, also popularly known as the Hare Krishna movement is a spiritual society founded by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in July 1966 in New York. From Director - Sankirtan.

ISKCON belongs to the Gaudiya-Vaishnava sampradaya, a monotheistic tradition within Vedic culture.

His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Founder Acharya of ISKCON, encouraged his disciples to distribute the Bhagavad-Gita all over the world and set in motion the ‘Gita Jayanti Book Marathon’. The campaign continues from Dec 1 to Dec 31 every year. The marathon provides devotees with a unique opportunity to distribute the transcendental literature. The Gita Jayanti Book Marathon is a humble attempt in pursuance of the will of the Lord.

At the temples of ISKCON across the globe, Gita Jayanti is celebrated during this period with special offerings to Lord Krishna. Mass recital of the Bhagavad-Gita is performed throughout the day. Gita Jayanti is also celebrated as Mokshada Ekadashi. Gita Jayanti Festival is observed for spiritual benefit of people and universal peace welfare. To mark the occasion this year, ISKCON is distributing Bhagavad-Gita at a discounted rate across the state.

ISKCON will also involve the corporate sector to sponsor copies of Bhagvad-Gita or to present it to people as a New Year gift. Sponsor companies can also put their company logos followed by their company names and messages inside the Bhagvad-Gita. Bhagvad-Gita copies are available in English and Hindi at a discounted price.

Bhagavad Gita can be sponsored in the quantity of 500, 1000, 5,000 and 10,000 in Hindi and English which would be distributed freely to orphans, old age homes, the ailing, jails, etc. ISKCON has also started a Gita Contest in public schools, which offers students a visit to ISKCON. This includes shows, entertainment and prasad for students.

The aim of ISKCON is to acquaint people of the world with the universal principles of self-realization and God consciousness so that they may derive the highest benefit of spiritual understanding, unity and peace. Vedic literature recommends that in the present age of Kali-yuga the most effective means of achieving self-realization is to chant the Holy Names of Lord Krishna and understanding Him by hearing and reading about Him.

According to Sripad Gopal Krishna Goswami ji Maharaj, Governing Body Commissioner, ISKCON, “These books have immense spiritual strength and even if somebody understands one sloka of these books and follows it his whole life will change.”

ISKCON follows the teachings of the Vedas and Vedic scriptures, including the Bhagavad-Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, which teach Vaishnavism or devotion to God (Krishna) in His Supreme Personal aspect of Sri Sri Radha Krishna.

Today ISKCON comprises more than 500 temples, 40 rural communities and over 100 vegetarian restaurants. It also conducts special projects throughout the world, such as “Food for Life”, the only free vegetarian relief program in the world.  ISKCON also conducts seminars on stress management to college students and in corporate sector.

Chanting Hare Krsna is the easiest process by which to become purified, especially in this age, when people are so dull that they cannot very easily understand spiritual knowledge.

If one chants Hare Krsna, then his intelligence becomes purified, and he can understand spiritual things.

Dandavats.com: The Structural Gambit for Celibacy and Chastity

By Vrndavanlila Devi Dasi

Despite this fast changing world where promiscuity encouraged by the hedonist approach to life is overtaking almost everywhere, India still preserves its age old veneration towards celibacy. The vast majority of girls and boys still remain celebate till their marriage and even post-marriage lead a regulated life. Of course in cities, this ‘conservative’ species are on the brink of extinction, and even when preserved, generally make the person a butt of ridicule and curiosity

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: Obedience to all surrendered devotees, not just pure devotees

In ISKCON, especially in the past and also in the present, I have read, and seen how devotees show obedience only to "pure devotees" and not so much to other devotees. I think this very reason is why there are many factions. After Srila Prabhupada left the planet some disciples of his started to question the authority of the then leaders and still question now. They think no one is a pure devotee as pure as Srila Prabhupada. Citing that as an excuse, many devotees left ISKCON either looking elsewhere for devotees or just plain left spiritual life altogether.

Some created their own groups criticizing the gurus of ISKCON and slandering their character. I admit, although, there were genuine misgivings, still the general aura is that beyond Srila Prabhupada there is no one who can be seen as pure and hence display an air of disobedience towards them. Srila Prabhupada may have been a saktyavesa avatar and nitya siddha, but because the other Gurus or leaders of ISKCON are not like Prabhupada I will not be obedient to them is not the proper mood of a devotee. This sort of mentality is the reason we have many groups and factions within and without ISKCON. This is not what Srila Prabhupada wanted.

To prove that this sort of mentality comparing current gurus to Srila Prabhupada and that they are not pure enough and hence will not be obedient to them is wrong. Below is a letter by Srila Prabhupada himself on this specific matter.

But I think you have got the mistaken idea in this connection. You speak of pure devotee, that he is saktyavesa avatara, that we should obey him only--these things are the wrong idea. If anyone thinks like that, that a pure devotee should be obeyed and no one else, that means he is a nonsense.

We advise everyone to address one another as Prabhu. Prabhu means master, so how the master should be disobeyed? Others, they are also pure devotees. All of my disciples are pure devotees. Anyone sincerely serving the spiritual master is a pure devotee, it may be Siddhasvarupa or others, a-Siddhasvarupa. This must be very clearly stated. It is not only that your Siddhasvarupa is a pure devotee and not others. Do not try to make a faction. Siddhasvarupa is a good soul. But others should not be misled. Anyone who is surrendered to the spiritual master is a pure devotee, it doesn't matter if Siddhasvarupa or non-Siddhasvarupa. Amongst ourselves one should respect others as Prabhu, master, one another. As soon as we distinguish here is a pure devotee, here is a non-pure devotee, that means I am a nonsense.

Why you only want to be in the spiritual sky with Siddhasvarupa? Why not all? If Siddhasvarupa can go, why not everyone? Siddhasvarupa will go, you will go, Syamasundara. will go, all others will go. We will have another ISKCON there.

-Srila Prabhupada letter to Tusta Krishna 14 Dec 1972

Clearly, Srila Prabhupada is making a case that to think to submit to only pure devotee and not to other senior devotees is a fallible idea and as Prabhupada says "nonsense" on our part. Yes, the current gurus may not be nitya-siddha devotees and may be still conditioned, but still if they sincerely follow the instructions of their spiritual master without deviations, they can be considered liberated and worth surrendering towards. That is why Prabhupada categorically says everyone is a pure devotee and that everyone will go to the spiritual sky. The definition of pure devotee according to Srila Prabhupada is not an esoteric concept but simply based on one fundamental point and that is if a devotee is fully surrendered to the instructions of his guru, then he is a pure devotee and to such a pure devotee, we can surrender. No where in the letter Prabhupada defines pure devotee based on nitya siddha or other esoteric qualifications.

I am writing this post because I read this letter and reflected on how so many new devotees are bewildered by other factions and the reasons they give to accept only Prabhupada as guru and how they find fault with all the existing gurus. At one point, I was one of the devotees bewildered by the bickering and fault finding between devotees. I think this letter by Prabhupada clearly addresses this issue.

A Get Together

Burnaby, British Columbia

A simple six kilometer trek North of Royal Oak from Marine Drive took Nirguna, his fiancee Annique, and I to the residence of Chaitanya Chandra, Manoharini and their three boys. We were greeted at their door by the music they played.

Manoharini was bellowing out on bag pipes to the tune "Amazing Grace". And gracious they were. You just have to see their semi-detached apartment interior. The colours, images, lights and moods throw you into a world of the Ghost of Christmas Past.

Frankly, wherever I am invited, the hospitality is also from another sphere but this added feature of mood setting steals the show from venues of drab, everyday furniture and fixtures.

Some newcomers to Krishna Consciousness and solid veterans of Bhakti filled up the space when we sat to an interactive discussion on verses 22-25 from the Gita. Here they are from Chapter 14.

Bhagavan said, "O son of Pandu, he who does not hate illumination, attachment and delusion when they are present or long for them when they disappear; who is unwavering and undisturbed through all these reactions of material qualities, remaining neutral and transcendental, knowing that the modes alone are active; who is situated in the self and regards alike happiness and distress; who looks upon a lump of earth, a stone and a piece of gold with an equal eye; who is equal towards the desirable and the undesirable; who is steady, situated equally well in praise and blame, honour and dishonour; who treats alike both friend and enemy; and who has renounced all material activities--such a person is said to have transcended the modes of nature."

Here are links to morning classes on the Srimad Bhagavatam 11.22.5 and 11.22.6, given by HH Kadamba Kanana Swami on the 7 and 8 December 2011 in Durban, South Africa.

In these classes, Maharaja very much establishes the importance of having firm faith and a strong connection with the acaryas in our gaudiya vaishnava sampradaya. He also discusses the pros and cons of studying books other than Srila Prabhupada’s.

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: With Students' Help, Schools Going Green

When Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced in 2008 that he wanted city buildings to lower their energy consumption by 30% within a decade, one area seemed ripe for reductions: the city's 1,700 schools, spread across 1,200 buildings.
As part of New York City's goal to reduce energy consumption by 30% in its buildings, officials are turning to an unusual resource: city students. WSJ's Sophia Hollander visits a Bronx classroom to find out how.

Studded with new technology like smartboards and energy-gobbling appliances such as boilers, schools accounted for about a quarter of the city's overall energy use.

So John Shea, the head of school facilities for the Department of Education, decided to enlist an unlikely ally to shave energy costs: students.

On Friday, officials were scheduled to announce a competition for 30 schools participating in a pilot program that is run in conjunction with Solar One, a nonprofit environmental education organization.

The contest will award a total of $30,000 to the schools that reduce their energy use the most.
"It is unusual to have a curriculum issue come out of the department of the people who mop the floors and stock the toilet paper," Mr. Shea acknowledged with a smile during a recent interview. But it was a perfect fit, he said. "The fact is we've got school buildings all over the city that are their own learning laboratories," he said.

Anna Bakis leads sixth-graders at P.S. 86 in the Bronx through an energy audit.

The Green Design Lab—a pilot project that started in 10 schools last year and has expanded to 30—brings Solar One teachers into the schools for up to 24 weeks. Through lessons, labs, and projects such as installing green roofs and gardens, Solar One instructors spend one or two classroom periods a week teaching five different units, including energy, air, water, materials and food. The group hopes to expand to 150 schools in the next three years.

The Green Design Lab is not the only sustainability initiative being embraced by New York City schools. On Thursday, the New York State Education Department announced that it was joining the federal Green Ribbon Schools program, which honors the most environmentally progressive schools.

The same day, the New York City Council approved construction of the city's first "energy neutral" school.

But the Solar One program may be the most ambitious, bringing together custodians, principals and teachers.

It is largely privately funded: Organizers said they expected the program to cost $900,000 this academic year, with 10% coming from the Department of Education and the City Council.

Edwin Marte was among the students participating in the audit.

"The basic premise of the program has kind of a triple bottom line impact," said Executive Director Chris Collins. "Reduce energy use, reduce CO2 emissions, and save the school money and increase student knowledge."

Public School 187 in upper Manhattan reduced its energy use by 13%, saving about $3,700.
"We had squads of children in various grades responsible for turning off the lights," said Principal Cynthia Chory, whose school won $5,000 for reducing its energy the most. "The students just kind of absorbed it."

Not every school has incorporated the program seamlessly.
"It's a really hard thing to sell, because today, teachers are asked so much. Our education system has gone in the direction of accountability; you know, more technology, high-stake tests," said Gladys Hechavarria, a teacher who brought the program to her school, P.S. 86 in the Bronx, this year. "Who am I to tell them to turn off the lights?"

Solar One teachers described their own challenges.
"It's funny, working with kids is just a breeze. It's when you actually try to push for these little minor changes that we're trying to make at the school it's the adults who kind of stand in the way," said Anna Bakis, a 25-year-old Solar One instructor who is working at two schools this year.

She was also surprised at the learning curve among her students. "I assumed they would know about global warming," she said. "When I ask who's heard of climate change or global warming, they're like, 'Oh it's when the seasons change.'"

On a recent afternoon, Ms. Bakis commanded the attention of a classroom in P.S. 86. Students clustered at tables, enthusiastically debating how much energy was consumed by common objects around the classroom, from computers to overhead projectors. Then Ms. Bakis armed each group with a watt reader to find out the answers themselves.

Dalvin Lopez, 12, raised his hand to ask where he could purchase his own kilowatt reader.
"I just want to go the closest store when I get out of school and buy myself one," he said after class, saying the program had "inspired me in a big way."
As a result of the program he now wanted to become "a scientist," he said.
But his friend had an even more intriguing idea, he added. "She wants to be a mad scientist."

Hare Krishna, Guru Maharaja, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and his followers. In the last canto of Srimad Bhagavatam the totally godless situation at the end of this Kali-yuga is described. But now so many people are attached to the Krishna Consciousness movement with more joining every day. So why is it that at the end of this Kali-yuga the situation will become so bad? What will happen to this Krishna consciousness movement? How can we change this? Simran Answer: Engineer History's Greatest Paradigm Shift Srila Prabhupada predicts that the Krishna consciousness movement will be present on this planet for the next 10,000 years and that after these 10,000 years it will disappear from this planet. So instead of worrying about what will happen 10,000 years from now we should be focused on what we can do right now to save the world. The exciting fact is that for the next 10,000 years we have a golden window of opportunity to completely inundate this entire universe with Krishna bhakti. And it is predicted by Krishnadas Kaviraja Goswami that this is what indeed will happen: saj-jana, durjana, pangu, jada, andha-gana prema-vanyya dubila jagatera jana "The Krishna consciousness movement will inundate the entire world and drown everyone, whether one be a gentleman, a rogue or even lame, invalid or blind."-- Caitanya Caritamrita di 7.26 So instead of worrying about the future, let's seize this opportunity we have right now at this moment to engineer the greatest paradigm shift in the history of the universe.
