H.G. Sankarshan das Adhikari, USA: Tuesday 16 August 2011--Seeing Krishna Everywhere--and--Vedas Are Trillions of Years Old?

A daily broadcast of the Ultimate Self Realization Course Tuesday 16 August 2011 The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and His eternal consort, Srimati Radharani are enjoying transcendental pastimes in the topmost planet of the spiritual world, Sri Goloka Vrindavan. They are beckoning us to rejoin them. (Click on photo to see a larger image.) Our Mission: To help everyone awaken their original Krishna consciousness, which is eternal, full of knowledge and full of bliss. Such a global awakening will, in one stroke, solve all the problems of the world society bringing in a new era of unprecedented peace and prosperity for all. May that day, which the world so desperately needs, come very soon. We request you to participate in this mission by reviving your dormant Krishna consciousness and assisting us in spreading this science all over the world. Dedicated with love to ISKCON Founder-Acharya: His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, our beloved spiritual master, and to you, our dear readers. Special Announcement: Connect With Other Members of this Course. Join this Conference: http://groups.google.com/group/sda_students Today's Thought: Seeing Krishna Everywhere Uploaded from Bhaktivedanta Ashram, Austin, Texas USA There is nowhere where Krishna is not present. He's in the sky. He's in the trees. He's in the flowers. He's in the breeze. If you want to feel amazingly alive, always electrified by His divine presence, you must call out His names with pure love accepting Him as your only shelter. If you do so, you will enter into your eternal identity situated billions and trillions of light years beyond this universe and all the universes of this material existence. If you continue faithfully, patiently with this process of awakening your love of Krishna, your vision will gradually become more and more clarified reaching that magnificently splendorous point where you will be able to clearly see Krishna everywhere. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Chant Krishna's Names With Pure Love and the Glorious Day Will Come When You Will See Him Everywhere http://www.backtohome.com/images/Krishna/krishna_in_sky.jpg Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Question: Vedas Are Trillions of Years Old? If you can show me one proof from comparative religion or world history to support your hilarious claim, that the Vedic wisdom that has been around for trillions of years, I will accept your argument Thanks R.D. Answer: A Prejudiced Mind Cannot Be Enlightened With all due respect to your good self, you have shown that your mind is already prejudiced by your use of the word hilarious. Since a prejudiced mind cannot be enlightened, it is better we wait until you abandon your prejudice and become truly open minded before we share with you the history of how the Vedas were revealed in this universe trillions of years ago. We know that according to the big bang theory of the material scientists this universe is only about 13.7 billion years old. Their theory is based on the absurd unscientific assumption that the universe comes out of absolutely nothing. This is an assumption that cannot be scientifically demonstrated. We are expected to be their faithful followers and accept it blindly. Since we detest being cheated, we have refused to accept this hogwash. Perhaps hearing from them is what has prejudiced your mind. Kindly note in this connection that prejudiced minds are stagnant and thus can never flow to the supreme ocean of transcendental enlightenment. "The ship ran all night smoothly and in the sky although cloudy there was moonlight. In the morning there was sunshine but from 12 noon we are passing through cyclonic weather. The ship is tilting too much. I felt sea sickness all day and night. At 3 p.m. the ship turned towards the coast and we are now in Ceylon waters."

Ekendra das, Alachua, USA: I don't eat anything cookable.

For the past twenty-two years, visiting my family has been a challenge.

It’s been a social challenge, because for my whole life I’ve never felt they really understood me. And since I’ve broadened my interests to include Krishna consciousness and exploring the practical applications of the Bhagavad-Gita, my feeble and infrequent attempts to communicate such things to them have resulted in no end of misunderstandings and silent time on the sofa watching TV — and I have zero to say about televised college sports.

It’s also been a nutritional challenge. I’ve become accustomed to the finest vegetarian cooking on the face of this Earth, thanks to having a wife who’s a faithful Acharya of Gourmet Vedic Cuisine. My family’s idea of exotic, international food is Stouffer’s Frozen French Bread Pizza. It’s usually a “kill and grill” situation there.

I’ve tried to bridge the gap by volunteering to cook for them every time we visit (which usually means volunteering my wife to cook), but then they complain that every time we come we turn their kitchen upside down. And cooking in their kitchen, with implements that have been used to boil, fry, bake and fricassee every species of sentient life on the planet, always leaves us feeling creeped out and exhausted.

Plus, after twenty-two years, my dad still doesn’t quite get it that I’m vegetarian.

I visited him last month. He was planning to cook some barbecued chicken on the grill, the kind he used to barbecue on the grill when I was a kid. I had planned ahead and brought the fixings for cheese sandwiches, not wanting to throw his home into upheaval. But dinner being a bonding experience, he wanted to share his with me.

“What can I cook for you? Anything? Do you eat chicken?”

“No, Dad.”

“Fish?”

“No. We don’t eat any meat, fish, or eggs.”

“What the hell can I cook? You guys don’t eat anything that’s cookable!”

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: 2nd Month of Caturmasya has begun...

Picture
Over the weekend, the 2nd month of caturmasya known as bhadra began which means fasting from yogurt.

We are a bit tardy on the posts again but have a good excuse...we were distributing Srila Prabhupada's books for practically the entire weekend. So Balarama's nectar posts are yet to come...

The purpose of caturmasya is to decease our sense enjoyment and in turn increase our devotional service to Krishna. As Srila Prabhupada states in Caitanya Caritamrta, “The real purpose behind the vow taken during these four months is to minimize the quantity of sense gratification...”

Srila Prabupada also states. "“Chaturmasya should be observed by all sections of the population,” he wrote. “It does not matter whether one is a grihasta or a sannyasi. The observance is obligatory for all ashramas.”

Srila Prabhupada also points out the simplicity of observing Catusmasya. “This is not very difficult,” he wrote. “In the month of Sravana one should not eat spinach, in the month of Bhadra one should not eat yogurt, and in the month of Asvina one should not drink milk..."

So we pray that you have a devotional month...

Australian News: Economic Times of India recognizes Prabhupada's journey west

In 1965, when Srila Prabhupada, the founder of the Hare Krishna Movement, made his now historic journey to the West on the steamer Jaladhuta, all he had with him was a crate of Srimad-Bhagavatams, a pair of hand cymbals and seven dollars.

He suffered from severe bouts of seasickness and cardiac trouble when the ship went through heavy storms for two consecutive nights. At age 69, Prabhupada knew these could prove fatal. But on the third night, he dreamt that the Blue Lord Himself was rowing the ship to America, urging him on, and offering him all protection.

The next day, the storms and palpitations subsided. When the ship docked in New York City, he wondered how he would make westerners understand the message of Krishna Consciousness. So he wrote a letter to the Lord from his cabin.

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: With Post-Its And Checklists, Schools Cut Their Energy Bills

Ozier Muhammad/The New York Times

Stickers offer reminders to conserve energy at schools in Holmdel Township, N.J.

Simple yellow Post-it notes with the message "When not in use, turn off the juice," pointedly left on classroom computers, printers and air-conditioners, have helped the Mount Sinai School District on Long Island save $350,000 annually on utility bills.

Ozier Muhammad/The New York Times

William Balicki oversees a New Jersey district's energy-saving efforts.

Energy consumption in New York City's 1,245 school buildings is down roughly 11 percent since 2008, as motion detectors have been installed on classroom lights and unused refrigerators and freezers have been unplugged for the summer.

In Yonkers, energy savings have financed $18 million in new boilers, windows and other capital improvements that the Westchester County district could not otherwise afford.

Schools, once known as energy wasters, are embracing conservation in increasing numbers. A desire to practice the environmentally friendly principles discussed in classrooms has been heightened by soaring energy costs and tighter budgets. With the help of a growing industry of energy consultants, school officials are evaluating every detail of their daily operations, like the temperature of the swimming pool and the amount of electricity the cafeteria ovens use, and are replacing energy-guzzling equipment with more efficient models.

Supporters say that even small adjustments can pay off almost immediately. "If we tested schools in efficient use of energy, many of them wouldn't get a passing grade," said C. David Myers, president of building efficiency for Johnson Controls, which has joined with 60 of the 125 school districts on Long Island to reduce energy use by 20 to 40 percent annually.

Nationally, more than two dozen states, including California, Idaho, Kentucky, Montana, New Hampshire and Virginia, have used millions in federal stimulus money since 2009 to pay for energy programs and upgrades in school buildings, said Judy Marks, director of the National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities in Washington. These efforts include replacing light fixtures, adding solar panels and building geothermal heating and cooling systems.

Some states have also started programs to finance school conservation efforts and to create local contracting jobs. Most recently, Oregon passed legislation in June to provide school districts with low-interest loans and grants for school efficiency improvements; Washington State started a similar grant-based program in 2009.

In some instances, districts like Mount Sinai have appointed an official energy manager — in its case, Chris Heil, an assistant high school principal — to police hallways and classrooms to root out energy waste. Armed with yellow notes, he inspects 100 classrooms a day and "tickets" violators. Teachers have been known to run back to their classrooms when they see him coming. When one instructor refused to shut down his classroom computers at night, Mr. Heil sent him an e-mail calculating how much money was being wasted, and promised to share the next message with the superintendent.

"I'm kind of like the cop who walks around and makes sure people are doing what they're supposed to be doing," Mr. Heil said. "As soon as you take me away, people will start their bad habits again."

Mr. Heil sometimes shows up at schools at 4 a.m. to make sure the custodial staff remembered to turn off the lights. He has rummaged through storage closets to locate switches to shut down rooftop exhaust fans that ran nonstop. Such vigilance has reduced the district's utility costs by 30 percent since 2007, Mr. Heil said.

As part of the Bloomberg administration's campaign to reduce the municipal government's energy consumption and carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2017, the city awarded $100,000 in May to schools that voluntarily decreased their energy use in a monthlong competition. Martin Luther King Jr. Educational Campus in Manhattan won top honors with a 35 percent reduction. And this fall, rooftop solar panels are being installed on three school buildings.

"We're focused on energy reduction like crazy," said Dennis M. Walcott, the city's schools chancellor, who regularly checks on schools that he sees lighted up at night.

Many districts across the country have financed conservation efforts through so-called energy performance contracts with companies that advise them on how to be more energy-efficient and guarantee them specific savings, either in dollars or kilowatts. If the district's actual savings fall short, the company writes a check to make up the difference.

With contracts involving equipment investments — which can be $50,000 to tens of millions of dollars, depending on the scope of the projects — districts typically use existing utility budgets or borrow money through third-party lenders, and then pay it back out of their immediate energy savings so that no budget increase is needed.

In Yonkers, the improvements included replacing Lincoln High School's 60-year-old boilers, which guzzled 137,500 gallons of heating oil a year — "so much fuel that it seemed like we had oil trucks parked out front," said John Carr, the executive director of school facilities in Yonkers. The new boilers burn only 80,000 gallons.

Three consultants — Johnson Controls, Trane and Energy Education — have reported that their school business has grown by at least a third since 2006. The companies send in engineers and specialists to conduct extensive audits of each district — Energy Education uses a checklist of 1,200 items — and then custom-design conservation programs. "Anything that consumes energy, natural gas or water is going to get evaluated," said Larry Wash, Trane's president of global services.

In New Jersey, the schools in Holmdel Township have lowered their electric and gas bills by about half since 2009, to $1 million annually. In environmental terms, that breaks down to 3.5 million fewer kilowatts of power and 240,000 fewer therms of heat a year.

William Balicki, Holmdel's energy manager, said he kept a tight check on thermostats, and installed automatic timers on outdoor lights in bus yards and parking lots that once stayed on long after the drivers left.

Mr. Balicki also considered placing motion sensors on classroom lights, but instead settled for $75 worth of stickers to post above light switches as a reminder to flip them off.

"Anytime we can ask people to physically do it, we do," he said. "This is pretty much a people-based program. It's changing behavior."

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Krsna is not alone

Krsna in Vrndavana has got a great family. He has got His father. He has got His mother, Mother Yasoda, Nanda Maharaja. He has got so many friends, hundreds and thousands--boyfriends, girlfriends. The trees, the plants, the flowers, the fruits, the land, the water, the cows, the calves -- He is surrounded by a great family. He is not a single person. Suppose if we say, "Now the president is coming." So president means he is not only coming alone; he is coming with secretaries, his ministers, his military secretary and so many other people, some soldiers and bodyguards. He is not alone. So if a material president, insignificant, is always surrounded by his associates, so the Supreme Being, how He is associated with His surroundings, you can just imagine. He cannot be alone. That is Krsna.

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: Pure Logic

Mere logic cannot explain how even material objects expand their potency. These things can be understood by mature observation. The Absolute Truth expands His potency in the creation, maintenance and annihilation of the material world just as fire expands its potency of heat." (Viṣṇu Purāṇa 1.3.2) Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī explains that one can understand the power of a valuable gem not by logical statements but by observing the effect of the gem. Similarly, one can understand the potency of a mantra by observing its power to achieve a particular effect. Such potency doesn't depend on so-called logic. There is no logical necessity for a seed's growing into a tree and giving fruits that nourish the human body. One may argue that the genetic code for the entire tree is contained within the seed. But there is no logical necessity for the existence of the seed, nor for the seed's expanding itself into a gigantic tree. Ex post facto, or after the manifestation of the wonderful material nature, the foolish material scientist traces out the expansion of a seed's potency in an apparently logical sequence of events. But there is nothing within the realm of so-called pure logic that dictates that a seed should expand into a tree. Rather, such expansion should be understood to be the potency of the tree. Similarly, the potency of a jewel is its mystic power, and various mantras also contain innate potencies. Ultimately the mahā-mantra — Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare — has the potency to transfer one to the spiritual world of bliss and knowledge. In the same way, the Absolute Truth has the natural quality of expanding itself into innumerable varieties of material and spiritual worlds. We may logically describe this expansion after the fact, but we cannot deny the expansion of the Absolute Truth. The conditioned soul who purifies his consciousness through the process of devotional service can scientifically observe the expansion of the Absolute Truth as described here, just as one who is not blind can observe the expansion of a seed into a huge tee. One can understand the potency of a seed not by speculation but rather by practical observation. Similarly, one must purify his vision so that he can practically observe the expansion of the Absolute Truth. Such observation can take place either by the ears or by the eyes. Vedic knowledge is śabda-brahma, or transcendental potency in the form of sound vibration. Therefore, one can observe the functions of the Absolute Truth through submissive hearing of transcendental sound. Śāstra-cakṣus. When one's consciousness becomes fully purified one can perceive the Absolute Truth with all of one's spiritualized senses.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Sun-free photovoltaics

From MIT News

Materials engineered to give off precisely tuned wavelengths of light when heated are key to new high-efficiency generating system.

A new photovoltaic energy-conversion system developed at MIT can be powered solely by heat, generating electricity with no sunlight at all. While the principle involved is not new, a novel way of engineering the surface of a material to convert heat into precisely tuned wavelengths of light — selected to match the wavelengths that photovoltaic cells can best convert to electricity — makes the new system much more efficient than previous versions.

The key to this fine-tuned light emission, described in the journal Physical Review A, lies in a material with billions of nanoscale pits etched on its surface. When the material absorbs heat — whether from the sun, a hydrocarbon fuel, a decaying radioisotope or any other source — the pitted surface radiates energy primarily at these carefully chosen wavelengths.

Based on that technology, MIT researchers have made a button-sized power generator fueled by butane that can run three times longer than a lithium-ion battery of the same weight; the device can then be recharged instantly, just by snapping in a tiny cartridge of fresh fuel. Another device, powered by a radioisotope that steadily produces heat from radioactive decay, could generate electricity for 30 years without refueling or servicing — an ideal source of electricity for spacecraft headed on long missions away from the sun.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, 92 percent of all the energy we use involves converting heat into mechanical energy, and then often into electricity — such as using fuel to boil water to turn a turbine, which is attached to a generator. But today’s mechanical systems have relatively low efficiency, and can’t be scaled down to the small sizes needed for devices such as sensors, smartphones or medical monitors.

“Being able to convert heat from various sources into electricity without moving parts would bring huge benefits,” says Ivan Celanovic ScD ’06, research engineer in MIT’s Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies (ISN), “especially if we could do it efficiently, relatively inexpensively and on a small scale.”…

Thy will be Done!

By Vithal C Nadkarni, ET Bureau

"...I'm very unfortunate, unqualified, and most fallen, Therefore, I am seeking Your benediction so I can convince them, for I am powerless to do so on my own." The rest, as they say, is history.

In the next 12 years, from his arrival in New York until his final days in 1977, Srila Prabhupada was to circle the globe 14 times on lecture tours that took him to six continents.

He founded the religious colony of New Vrindavan in West Virginia, and he watched his movement grow to a confederation of more than 108 temples, various institutes and farm communities and he also found time to write more than 80 books!

His message was seemingly simple: "Don't fight with adversity. Just practice Krishna Consciousness sincerely; all discords will disappear by themselves."

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: The only way

  1. The only purpose of human form of life is purification
  2. The only way to get purified is when Krishna is pleased with us
  3. The only way to please Krishna is to please Guru (Yasya prasadad Bhagavat ........)
  4. The only way to please Guru is to follow his instruction.
  5. The only way by which we get determination to follow Guru's instructions is to follow his first and foremost instruction " Wake up early in the morning and chant 16 rounds of Hare Krishna Mahamantra".

This is the only process recommended in the 14 planetary system to perfect our lives.

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: An enthusiastic student

I was outside the University of Toronto farmer's market on Thursday afternoon and there were a lot of students in the area. That's when I met a young and energetic University student and she was enthusiastically checking out the Bhagavad Gita. She told me she had seen me near Carlton Street talking to people before and I explained how I lived in the area. As we talked we found out that we were actually neighbors. She looked very interested in the pictures and intrigued by the philosophy. It also turned out that she was starting a job at the Multifaith centre in September where we generally hold our club activities. It also turned out that she coordinates the farmers market and we were looking to serve food out in the area for students on Thursdays - there were too many things in common. She said she would read the books and keep in touch and we can only pray that it actually happens.

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: Let's get to know each other

I had been seeing this man for a few weeks now. Each week he would come out of the University building with a group of his friends and each week I would wave at him asking if he was interested in Prabhupada's books and he would just smile me by. So this week when I saw him I decided not to bother him anymore, I simply smiled and did not say a word. He walked a few steps with his friends and then he turned back, walked up to me and asked me what these books I had were. I was shocked but sure this had nothing to do with me.

So I showed him the Perfection of yoga but his eyes fell on the Gita that I was holding. He told me he had read it already and I was really surprised. I then showed him the Krishna book saying if you have read the Gita you must read about Krishna. He deeply admired the pictures and the explanations and agreed to take the Krishna book. I was remembering how I have heard in a lecture by Devamrita Swami that if we simply stay in an area for a while and even though someone is initially not receptive, eventually they will come around. We are making clear to them, we are here to stay and you are here to stay - so let's get to know each other.

Toronto Sankirtan Team, CA: Rightfully naughty

A few days ago it was quoted in Bhagvatam class how Srila Prabhupada had said that naughtiness in early childhood is a sign of future intelligence. Maharaj gave examples of how Srila Prabhupada changed the consciousness of children by this encouragement. So yesterday as I was in Kensington market I met this man with a little boy. He was semi-interested in the book but the little boy was just snatching it, looking into it and enjoying a thorough inspection. While I was trying to explain the book to his father, the little kid asked his father to simply buy the book. As the father was looking for laxmi he started to express how naughty his son was and completely impossible to control. I could see he was running everywhere but then I remembered what we had heard in Bhagvatam class and told this man that it was a sign of future intelligence. He was looking at me in disbelief and trying hard to believe me. He and the little boy left with a book.
