Join this Conference: http://groups.google.com/group/sda_students Today's Thought: The Appearance Day of Srimati Radharani Uploaded from Sofia, Bulgaria Today in Bulgaria it is Radhastami, the appearance day of Srimati Radharani. Radharani is our most beloved spiritual mother. Today we fast until noon and then partake of the feast that has been prepared for her. Those who are especially fortunate will be in the kitchen this morning preparing her feast. Devotees who are at home can also celebrate her appearance day by fasting and by preparing and partaking of a feast in her honor. It is only because of her unlimited kindness that we have access to her beloved Lord Sri Krishna. Mother Radharani is most kind. If we pray to her to tell Krishna about us, she will recommend us to Krishna that we are better devotees than she. In this way, by her divine grace, we will get the attention and special blessings of Krishna and our lives will be become perfect. This is how we should pray on this most auspicious day. Sankarshan Das Adhikari Srimati Radharani Worships Her Beloved Krishna http://www.backtohome.com/images/Krishna/Radha_Govinda.jpg Answers by Citing the Vedic Version: Question: Serving God is Serving Mankind? My humble obeisances, How far is the statement, Madhava seva is manava seva, correct or relevant today? Surendranathan Answer: Watering the Root Nourishes the Tree The concept, Madhava seva is manava seva, which means, Serving God is serving mankind, is a universally valid principle, which has always been true and will always be true. God is the root of the entire tree of creation, and everything else is the leaves and branches of that tree. Just as when we water the root of a tree all the leaves and branches are nourished, when we give our love to Krishna or God, that love is automatically distributed to all living beings throughout the entire creation. This is the perfection of service. Some people say it the other way around that serving man is serving God--manava seva is Madhava seva. But then they kill the cows and the unborn children within the womb. This is not service. This is a disturbance. And besides that, why only serve man? There are millions of other species. Why they should be neglected? There is also God. Why He should be neglected? You cannot water a tree by watering its leaves and branches. You can only water a tree by watering its root. Similarly, you cannot water the tree of creation by watering the creation. You must water the root of creation. And that is the Creator, Krishna or God. WALK AND SMILE

Winnipeg, Manitoba

Daruka and I trekked over the Arlington Bridge which spans over a remarkable network of railroad tracks as Winnipeg was and still is a major rail destination and intersection for decades. Daruka tells me that the iron bridge is rumored to have been structured initially to span over the Nile River but the purchasers wouldn't accept delivery, so it came to Winnipeg from Birmingham. This may not be the actual history but you know how it is, people just love to hold onto romantic legends.

We were on our second visit for the day, the first was a monk's brunch at an East Indian family's home. Then, after the Arlington stroll we reached the home of a Phillipino/ Indian couple for dinner with an exotic array of fruits. Our next walk through the hip Osborne Village district brought us to a Welsh woman, a Krishna devotee, who accidently injured her leg. There we were chanting at our third visit and then heard a recording of Il Volo's version of the Charlie Chaplin composition 'Smile'. Have you ever heard that piece? It's stunning.

Our final walk was to our ISKCON Centre at 108 Chestnut Street, thanks to host Vrnda. With a professional opera singer and professional pianist we once again tackled the maha mantra:

Hare Krishna

Hare Krishna

Krishna Krishna

Hare Hare

Hare Rama

Hare Rama

Rama Rama

Hare Hare

It was the final visit and chant for the day. Daruka and I were smiling. Our guru, Srila Pabhupada, liked smiling and he also wanted his students to be both serious and happy. Here are the lyrics to 'Smile'.

Smile, though your heart is aching

Smile, even though it's breaking

When there are clouds in the sky
you'll get by

If you smile through your fear and sorrow

Smile and maybe tomorrow

You'll see the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness

Hide every trace of sadness

Although a tear may be ever so near

That's the time you must keep on trying

Smile what's the use of crying

You'll find that life is still worthwhile

If you just

Smile

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: Radharani's excellence

"Srimati Radharani's excellence was Her cooking," Prabhupada said. "She could also sing and dance, but Her great service was Her cooking for Krsna. Mother Yasoda would ask Her personally to come and cook for Krsna and the cowherd boys. So, all in a line, She would feed them prasadam."

Kripamoya dasa, UK: Our Spiritual Retreat: Indoors and Outdoors

Sometimes being on a spiritual retreat can include getting messy…Buckland Hall was the setting for the recent gathering of the Leicester Vaishnava community.

I have just been on a spiritual retreat at Buckland Hall in the Brecon Beacons in Wales. I have been there several times and it never disappoints as a venue for weekend breaks. Its a great place for a quiet weekend away, and the natural beauty surrounding the large Victorian house uplifts the spirit. But this particular weekend wasn’t all quiet, although there were definitely quiet moments. Around 70 ISKCON members from Leicester made for lively company and much discussion. I was helping to lead some morning sessions, but managed to join in with a highly spirited group of youngsters when they went out for an energetic aerial assault course!

Sometimes people challenge me as to the value of retreats, since those who are leading a spiritual life can do so anywhere, and don’t need to leave home to do it. Whilst I agree with that viewpoint in principle, I would also say that there is great value to changing one’s environment occasionally, spending dedicated time in reflection, and joining together with others of similar mind.

The first session I led was about the value of dharmic morality as a foundation to life generally, and spiritual life in particular. Often in Gaudiya Vaishnavism we focus on transcendence to the occasional detriment of morality, forgetting that our God is the law-maker of the universe, as well as being the enchanting flute-player. While converts to Vaishnavism may bring their Judaeo-Christian value system with them, and refer to it to guide many life choices, the so-called ‘second generation’ of our devotees don’t have that. It is therefore essential that parents give their children a value system for life, which includes values of personal and social morality, as much as they help them develop their innate love for God. Indeed, loving God, or professing love for Him, without following His laws is no love at all. In the case of Gaudiya Vaishnavism such premature profession of love for God, accompanied by immorality, has plagued the entire sampradaya for around 400 years. Its up to us to get it right.

Getting to grips with wax crayons while on spiritual retreat

We did an artistic session on ‘How I came to Krishna’ which involved drawing the events and realisations that brought us to faith in Krishna. I don’t think I have used wax crayons to make a picture for around 40 years – it was surprising how fulfilling 15 minutes with wax crayons can be! The first afternoon saw everyone out of the building, visiting either a farm or the aforementioned assault course. Lots of fresh country air for the city-dwellers and courage-building 50 feet up in the air on a zip-wire. I never quite imagined myself climbing a telegraph pole being whipped by the cold wind on a Welsh hillside, but I did it  - and lived. Another group of young devotees, far more intrepid than I, got extremely cold and messy on the so-called ‘Gorge Walk,’ which turned out to be a polite name for walking, crawling and splashing through sticky brown ice-cold mud.

On the second day we focused on the ‘Eleven Elements of Bhakti’ from the Bhaktisandarbha, and on the last day a conglomerated list of Vaishnava life principles from the Upadeshamrita. Oh, and there was plenty of kirtan and fine prasadam.

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Transcendental Qualities of Srimati Radharani

Picture
In this evening's lecture at ISKCON Toronto, I will be describing the nectar of Srimati Radharani's birth and interaction with Krishna. One of my favourite topics is the qualities of Srimati Radharani and although some may be touched upon this evening, there are the 25 transcendental  qualities of Srimati Radahrani as presented to us by Srila Prabhupada in Chapter 14 of Teachings of Lord Chaitanya
So Krishna has 64 transcendental qualities. Srimati Radharani has 25 transcendental qualities but She can control even Krishna by them. The video below also describes these 25 qualities.

Her transcendental qualities are:

1.    She is sweetness personified;

2.    She is a fresh young girl;

3.    Her eyes are always moving;

4.    She is always brightly smiling;

5.    She possesses all auspicious marks on Her body;

6.    She can agitate Kṛṣṇa by the flavor of Her person;

7.    She is expert in the art of singing;

8.    She can speak very nicely and sweetly;

9.    She is expert in presenting feminine attractions;

10.  She is modest and gentle;

11.  She is always very merciful;

12.  She is transcendentally cunning;

13.  She knows how to dress nicely;

14.  She is always shy;

15.  She is always respectful;

16.  She is always patient;

17.  She is very grave;

18.  She is enjoyed by Kṛṣṇa;

19.  She is always situated on the highest devotional platform;

20.  She is the abode of love of the residents of Gokula;

21.  She can give shelter to all kinds of devotees;

22.  She is always affectionate to superiors and inferiors;

23.  She is always obliged by the dealings of Her associates;

24.  She is the greatest amongst Kṛṣṇa's girl friends;

25.  She always keeps Kṛṣṇa under Her control.

Thus Krishna and Radharani are both transcendentally qualified, and both of Them attract one another. Yet in that transcendental attraction, Radharani is greater than Krishna, for the attractiveness of Radharani is the transcendental taste in conjugal love. Similarly, there are transcendental tastes in servitude, friendship and other relationships with Krishna.Since even Lord Krishna cannot estimate Radharani's highly transcendental qualities, it is not possible for an ordinary man to estimate them.

Srimati Radharani ki Jaya!
Jaya Jaya Sri Radheeeeeeeeeee...Shyam!
Happy Radhastami!

Bhakta Chris, New York, USA: Radha, The Feminine Nature of God

From my good friend and fellow monk Gadadhara Pandit Dasa at the Huffington Post

Millions will gather today, in India and around the world, to offer prayers, worship, and devotional songs glorifying the appearance of the Divine mother, Radha (Radharani). Radha descended from the spiritual realm shortly after Krishna, approximately 5,000 years ago. She took birth in the small village known as Barsana, which is about 28 miles from Mathura, the birth place of Krishna.
The word Radha comes from the Sanskrit verbal rootradh, which means to worship, and the word rani, which means queen. Radharani can be literally translated to mean "the queen of worship." In some texts, she is described as "the supreme goddess who is worshipable by everyone. She is the protector of all, and she is the mother of the entire universe."
The answer to the question that has been on everyone's mind for millennia is, YES and NO. The question is: Is God a Man? God is not just male, and according to some Vedic scriptures, God has both masculine and feminine expansions. In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna provides a sneak preview into these feminine traits.
"Among women I am fame, fortune, fine speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness and patience."
However, in some of the more esoteric texts such as the Puranas and the Chaitanya-Caritamrita, it explains that the complete manifestation of God includes his feminine counterpart, Radha. They are inconceivably one and different, as Krishna expanded himself into two for the purpose of exchanging love. There's a beautiful description in the Chaitanya-Caritamrita which gives us a window into the connection between Radha and Krishna.
"Radha is the full power, and Lord Kṛṣṇa is the possessor of full power. The two are not different, as evidenced by the revealed scriptures. They are indeed the same, just as musk and its scent are inseparable, or as fire and its heat are non-different. Thus Rādhā and Kṛiṣhṇa are one, yet they have taken two forms to enjoy the mellows of pastimes."
This concept is not an easy one to grasp. If God is full and complete, why does he need to expand himself to exchange love? The next question we can ask is why does God need to do anything? God has a personality which indicates that he has preferences. Perhaps this need to expand for the purpose of exchanging love speaks of the importance love plays in the lives of all individuals.

Our desire to love and be loved comes from God. For the most part, no one wants to be alone, at least not permanently. The thing everyone is chasing after is love. We all want to know that there are people out there that love us. Simultaneously, we hanker to be able to give our love to others.
There is another passage in the Caitanya-Caritamrita that describes Radha's qualities and love for Krishna.
"Radharani's body, mind, and words are steeped in love for Krishna ... The body of Radharani is a veritable transformation of love of Godhead. Even Krishna can't understand the strength of Radha's love which overwhelms Him. Her transcendental body is complete with unparalleled spiritual qualities. Even Lord Kṛiṣhṇa Himself cannot reach the limit of the transcendental qualities of Radharani."
These are some of Radha's prominent qualities:
1. Radha is adolescent and always freshly youthful.
2. Radharani is very sweet and most charming to look at.
3. Radha's face is smiling and ever blissful.
4. Radharani is the most exceptional singer and veena player.
5. Radha's words are charming and pleasing.
6. Radha is exceptionally humble.
7. Radha is the embodiment of mercy and compassion.
8. Radha possesses Mahabhava, the highest sentiment of love.
9. Radha always keeps Krishna under Her control. Krishna submissively obeys Radha's command
These topics of divine and spiritual love between Radha and Krishna will always remain a mystery as long as we remain on the material platform. Love on the spiritual platform is devoid of selfishness. The needs and interests on the other take precedence over one's own needs. The kind of love that comes closest to spiritual love is the love exhibited by a mother towards her child. It's full of sacrifice and is completely selfless; it is without expectation.
The feeling of love is derived from the service itself. The child is limited in its capacity to reciprocate the mother's love. Even if it increases its demands, the mother keeps on giving. Most of us can only imagine a relationship where the reciprocation of love and service is completely selfless and without expectation. It's the kind of love our hearts hanker for.
The path of bhakti or devotional service prepares one's heart and consciousness -- by eradicating selfishness and incorporating selflessness -- to understand and experience that divine love which exists between Radha and Krishna.
This is a wonderful day to meditate and reflect on the beautiful selfless qualities of Radharani and pray that we can to some degree follow in her footsteps.

Ananda Subramanian, Iowa, USA: successive stages of purification

For the purification of the heart it is necessary first of all to listen to the chanting of the Holy Name. After the heart has been purified by listening to the Holy Name the fitness for the manifestation of the holy Form is attained on hearing the recital of scriptural accounts of the divine form. After the full appearance of the divine form, the divine qualities manifest themselves. After the appearance of the divine qualities, due to the characteristic traits of servitors, the knowledge of the distinctive and perfect identification of the devotee arises. Subsequent to this, after the full manifestation of the Name, form, quality and servitor has taken place, the transcendental activity of God manifests itself. For this reason this account of the successive stages of sadhana is written." (Krama-sandarbha commentary on Srimad Bhagavatam 7.5.18)

Subhavilasa das ACBSP, Toronto, CA: Happy Radhastami!

Picture
Below is an excerpt of a  lecture by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada from Radhastami 1968 in Montreal. It explains the song "radhe jaya jaya madhava-dayite" or Radhika Stava.
Please meditate on Srila Prabhupada's words as you watch the following video.

__________________________________________________________________

radhe jaya jaya madhava-dayite
gokula-taruni-mandala-mahite
damodara-rati-vardhana-vese
hari-niskuta-vrnda-vipinese
vrsabhanu-dadhi-nava-sasi-lekhe
lalita-sakhi guna-ramita-visakhe
karunam kuru mayi karuna-bharite
sanaka-sanatana-varnita-carite
radhe jaya jaya madhava-dayite

This song was sung by Rupa Gosvami. He is the real person, actual person, to understand Radha and Krsna. So he says, "All glories to Radharani." radhe jaya jaya madhava-dayite. "She's so dear to Krsna." Krsna, everyone is trying to love Krsna, but Krsna is trying to love somebody. Now how great She is. Just try to understand. Everyone, the whole world, the whole universe, all living entities, they are trying to love Krsna. Krsna-prema. Lord Caitanya describes, prema-pumartho mahan. And Rupa Gosvami described that "You are distributing krsna-prema." Sokrsna-prema is so valuable, but Krsna is after Radharani. Just see how Radharani is great. Just try to understand the greatness of Radharani. Therefore She is so great, and we have to offer our respect. Radhe jaya jaya madhava-dayite. How She is?

Gokula-taruni-mandala-mahite. Taruni, taruni means young girls. You'll see the pictures, they are all young girls. But of all the young girls, She is the most beautiful. She is enchanting to the young girls also. She is so beautiful. Gokula-taruni-mandala-mahite, damodara-rati-vardhana-vese. And She always dresses Herself so nicely that Damodara, Krsna, becomes attracted by Her beauty. Hari-niskuta-vrnda-vipinese. And She is the only lovable object of Krsna, and She is the "Queen of Vrndavan." This "Queen of Vrndavan" you'll find in Vrndavan, if you go to Vrndavan, everyone is worshiping Radharani. Rani means queen. They are always speaking, "Jaya Radhe!" Radharani. All the devotees in Vrndavan, they are worshiper of Radharani.

Hari-niskuta-vrnda-vipinese, vrsabhanu-dadhi-nava-sasi-lekhe. And She appeared as the daughter of King Vrsabhanu, and Her companion, Lalita-sakhi and Visakha-sakhi, and the devotees. So on behalf of the pure devotees of Krsna, Rupa Gosvami is praying, karunam kuru mayi karuna-bharite. "Oh, my worshipable Radharani, You are full of mercy. So I am begging of Your mercy because You are so merciful, very easily You offer, bestow Your mercy. So I am begging Your mercy." Karunam kuru mayi karuna-bharite, sanaka-sanatana-varnita-carite. Now somebody may say, "Oh, you are so great, learned scholar, you are so great saintly person, and you are begging mercy from an ordinary girl? How is that?" Therefore Rupa Gosvami says, "Oh, this is not ordinary girl." Sanaka-sanatana-varnita-carite. "This girl's description is possible to be made by great saintly persons like Sanaka-Sanatana. She is not ordinary."

So the lesson is that we should not treat Radharani as ordinary girl, or Krsna as ordinary man. They are the Supreme Absolute Truth. But in the Absolute Truth, there is the pleasure potency, and that is exhibited in the dealings of Radha and Krsna. And Radha's expansion all the gopis, and Krsna is the Supreme Lord.

Thank you very much. Chant Hare Krsna.

~ Srila Prabhupada

1972 September 4: "There is no difference between me and my picture. Therefore we should honor and keep pictures in that spirit. The name and picture are as good as the person in spiritual world. In the material world either picture or person, everything is illusion."

Srila Prabhupada's Letters

1972 September 4: "The Spiritual Master accepts the sinful activities of his disciples from first initiation. I may give initiation very easily, but what can I do? I am prepared to go to hell for the service of Lord Caitanya."

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Forgiveness?

This is a  story  about old Rama das and old Tulasi das, two  members of an  ISKCON forum, who were always at odds with each other. They were constantly at each others’ throat  in issues concerning ISKCON. When one of them said “yea,” you could be assured that the other would say “nay.”

So, one day old Rama das dies and arrives at the court of Yamaraja. He notices how Yamaraja asks everyone a question, before they proceeded. When it was his turn, Yamaraja said: “Hi Rama das, to see if you qualify for Vaikuntha, I need to ask you to spell Krishna for me.” “That’s easy,” says Rama das, and goes: “K-r-i-s-h-n-a.” Yamaraja said: “Great, you’re in, but could you do me a small favor and take over here for a while; I just need to check on something. I’ll be back”

Rama das didn’t mind doing some service and asked everyone in line to spell Krishna. Just then, old Tulasi das was coming through the line. “What are you doing here?” asked old Tulasi das. Said Rama das; “O, I am just filling in for Yamaraja asking everybody to spell a word before they can pass through.” “O yeah, what’s the word?” asked Tulasi das. After thinking for a moment Rama das said: “Spell Bodhipakkhiyādhammā!”

Japa Group: The Earrings Of Radha

Hare Krsna dear devotees. Today in the Japa Room we had very nice feedback from devotees talking about their week of Japa. One devotee shared that his mind was wandering so much and he made a very good decision how to fix that - he prayed to his Deities Gaura Nitai and then he could concentrate and focus on the sound.

Another devotee said how his chanting improved by waking up early and chanting in the Brahma muhurta time.
These realisations inspire us and enthuse us to follow the same and improve our steps to get to Sudha Nama, pure chanting. Next week devotees will take notes and share with us what they have been doing to avoid inattention, offenses and chant with devotion.

Today I would like to pray to Srimate Radharani to protect us in our service and help us to advance in the path of service. May the queen of Vrindavana bless us with Her amazing qualities.
Here is a verse of the Radhastakam by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur.

The beauty of Her body is enhanced by Her twenty-five transcendental qualities, which hang as a flower garland on Her body. The ecstasy of love for Krishna is known as dhira and adhira, sober and restless. Such ecstasy constitutes the covering of Sri Radha´s body, and it is adorned by camphor. Her transcendental anger toward Krishna is embodied as Her braided and ornamented hair, and the tilak of Her great fortune shines on Her beautiful forehead. The earrings of Sri Radha are the holy names of Krishna as well as the hearing of His name and fame.
Gitavali Song 5

Wishing a wonderful week of chanting.

your servant,

Aruna devi
