Join this Conference: http://groups.google.com/group/sda_students Today's Thought: How Everyone Can Be Sufficiently Wealthy Uploaded from Copenhagen, Denmark People all over the world are always worried about not having sufficient money to live happily, but there is no need for all of this anxiety. Material opulence is given by Lakshmi, the goddess of fortune, who always remains engaged in loving service to God, Her beloved Lord Narayana, an expansion of Krishna. By Lakshmi's grace those who fully engage their wealth in the service of God are given whatever wealth is required to engage themselves happily in His service. It is only when we engage wealth in our own selfish purposes that we experience a constricted supply. Therefore if the people of the world would like to enjoy sufficient wealth, all they have to do is engage whatever opulence they have now in the service of God. Then they will receive more and more wealth to engage in the Lord's service. Because people are not aware of this simple fact, there is so much unnecessary anxiety all over the world about a lack of money. Dear Gurudeva, My humble obeisances to you. My question is: Even though a human being has the most intelligence to distinguish between good and evil, why is he still behaving like an animal? Is it because of his past karma that he is forced to do so? MS Answer: Bad Association. Now Change It. It is only due to bad association with materialistic men that a human being behaves like an animal. This is why is it very important to avoid worldly association as much as possible and take complete shelter of the association of the Lord's devotees. This transcendental association will make it very easy for one to realize the true purpose of his human form of life, to reawaken the dormant love of God that is sleeping inside of his heart. Australian News: Life, Insight, Nature and Events – The website of Radhanath Swami

Radhanath Swami is a disciple of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupad, the founder acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Radhanath Swami travels all over the world and lectures widely. The realizations that he shares in his lectures have transformed lives of thousands over the years. But many opine that Radhanath Swami's deepest realizations surface during the question and answer sessions that follow his discourses.

The doubts that haunt one on the spiritual path are seldom unique. And it's almost certain that someone has already got it clarified at some point of time in the past. So wouldn't it be nice to be able to access those answers whenever we are desperate for them? The purpose of this website is to provide that access. Most answers here are compiled from audio recordings of interactive sessions with Radhanath Swami. Some answers are extracted from audio recordings of his discourses, for questions framed by the administrators of this website. These are questions to which we felt many would want to know the answer.

All question have been categorized under four headings: Life, Insight, Nature and Events.

Three Places

Halifax, Pictou and New Glasgow

Pictou was a settlement of Scottsmen founded in 1776 and new Glasgow was much the same. There is definitely a "Highlander feel" to these places. The names, architecture and people give it away.

We do sometimes get hung up on heritage, ancestry and so on and the distinctions and divisions that separate us can be cause for disagreement and conflict. Conveniently we resolve this problem of bodily designations by declaring "I am not this body. I am spirit."

One fellow I met yesterday who was extremely gentlemanly in manner, settled for this philosophy of "oneness". "We are all one" was his prescription.

To a certain extent this is true. We are all spirits. Yet I had to point out that each spirit carries different karma. No two of us are alike. We are all individuals. I suggested that he contemplate the philosophy of Chaitanya who shared the concept that accommodates both oneness and distinction, of unity in diversity. This concept somewhat resonated with him.

I had met several people today- people of diverse natures, ages, genders including two news reporters, a yoga teacher, choir teacher and salesman. More people were met on Spring Garden Road in Halifax, a two hour drive from my walking area. As three brahmacharis (student monks) and I chanted there we saw so much diversity of people- a real "masala" and yet everyone there is "one" in the sense of wanting happiness but our approaches to it are different.

To See the Spirit Behind It

Broadway, Nova Scotia

When you see the name of a place on the map, you imagine what it might look like if you haven't yet been there. To quote Thomas A. Clark, "There are things we will never see unless we walk to them." Such read the plaque at a trail's entrance in Newfoundland. His statement might sound like practical truth but surely he means to go beyond simplicity with these words.

I had to see for myself what Broadway is like in Nova Scotia. Is it a hole in the ground? Because it certainly can't be what the Big Apple has to offer. The word "Broadway" was on my route. Well I walked there. My curiosity needed to become satisfied this morning.

To be wholly satisfied I would have hoped to see some quantity of people. Not to my surprise it has too few buildings to count, perhaps five at the most; population perhaps 20 and that might include the dogs. Anyways it is quality and not quantity that counts right? There are not the bright lights, the flash and the night life of New York. Broadway in Nova Scotia, by the way, does have many holes, as well as trees, brooks, hills, fox and deer. It's not a bad destination place for a pilgrim.

When Clark spoke of "seeing" I believe he was speaking of "feeling". Had I not been chanting while trekking through the place I might not have perceived the spiritual connection, in other words, the Krishna element behind it. I would just determine it to be a mundane place.

Our guru, Srila Prabhupada, perceived an ordinary place to have God's presence. For instance he said of Holland's countryside as being like Vrindavana (Krishna's childhood playground) because of the cows, pastures and quaint buildings.

In that sense the Broadway I just walked through is more like the spiritual world. Perhaps someday I'll perceive that busy place of skyscrapers and entertainment to be some kind of reflection of the spiritual world.

Bharatavarsa.net: Bhakti Vikasa Swami: remembering is the whole thing

So this remembering is the whole thing. If you have got always within your heart Krsna, by sound or by mental thoughts, by work, some way or other, by reading books, any way, if simply you keep your consciousness in Krsna, then your life is successful. That's all.

Madhava Ghosh dasa, New Vrndavan, USA: Organic vs. Local Food

By Louisa Shafia

The latest debate in the food world is over whether to choose organic or locally grown. Organic advocates feel you shouldn't tolerate pesticide use under any circumstances, while locavores— people who favor locally grown food — say it's more important to buy from local farms and conserve the fuel spent on transporting food long distances. To help you decide where you stand on the organic vs. local debate, here are some of the pros and cons of these two food philosophies. Definition of Organic Food: Food grown without pesticides, genetically modified ingredients, irradiation, antibiotics, hormones, or fertilizer made from sewage sludge.Pros of organic food
  • Farm workers are not exposed to pesticides
  • Pesticides and fertilizers do not pollute soil and waterways
  • Some studies have shown that organic food is more nutritious and flavorful than conventionally grown food

Cons of organic food

  • Organic products can leave a big carbon footprint. Even if something was grown in China and exported to the United States, it can still be called "organic"
  • Many organic food products come from abroad, often Third World countries, where it's difficult to ensure that US organic standards are truly met
  • The requirements for an organic label do not include the humane treatment of animals, fair labor practices, or ecologically conscious farming practices

Definition of Local Food: Food from local farms, gardens, or the wild. "Local" can mean 100 miles from your home to a day's drive, depending on whom you ask.

Pros of locally grown food

  • Buying local helps to support small farms. More small farms means more genetic diversity of plants and animals, which makes the food system less vulnerable to disease
  • Supporting small farms keeps money within the local economy, saves local jobs, and preserves farmland and open space
  • Local food doesn't contribute to air pollution and global warming to the same degree as food that travels long distances

Cons of locally grown food

  • Locally grown food is not necessarily pesticide-free
  • Many places are not suited to agriculture during certain times of year, like the Midwestern states in winter
  • Studies show that a diet of mostly plants, no matter where they're from, is better for the environment than a meat-heavy local diet

David Haslam, UK: A rambling thought, or self critique, or possibly both

Share

Today I am feeling exceptionally sad, not only having to delay my return to what I call my "Home" the Manor but after receiving an e-mail from my own Guru Maharaja; indeed I feel may be a clinical depression is coming on or at least a state of dealing with situations you have no control of and a reminded of how bad a devotee I really am.

The complications of working in the nursing profession seems at times to be at odds with that of devotional life, it’s hard for non-nursing individuals even my own sweet Guru Maharaja to understand the difficulties and also the emotional pull. It is not that you can just be given a date or take time off as an when needed Nursing does not really facilitate this, nor pulling a sicky to attend a function as you are aware of the impact this will have on clients.

So receiving dates for up coming visits in advance certainly helps, although as I already have an exceptional amount of time off to facilitate my monthly visits to The Manor, receiving an e-mail chastising me for not keeping up to date on a changed schedule means that it will be neon impossible for me to get the time off needed.

It also highlighted again my own personal failings, Yes although my colleges recognize and appreciate my nursing skills and knowledge my social skills and interpersonal skills are indeed sadly lacking and try as I can it’s an area that personally I consistently fail on, so like an arrow piercing the heart so were my own Guru Maharaja’s words (which in many ways is not a bad thing)

In reality it’s a glaring reminded of a personal failure, I do not know the devotee he is talking about, I should, but sadly I don’t and so a link is lost; indeed I know very few devotees even those at The Manor finding myself sat on my own in a corner; and then to compound the piercing arrow along comes another, the dates for Wales; given that I am still not welcome there despite much supplication’s being made.

Indeed it is a reminder of a personal state of ill-health, a personality flaw that I am not so endearing to others unless they are ill and in need of care. And as my Guru Maharaja reminds me there is only one person who is to blame, the hand points directly at me and as time moves on it grows bigger.

I could blame my childhood, many do, discouraged by parents from having friends and limited to a very small circle, being physically and emotionally abused it was easy to just busy myself in my own company; whilst observing the great friendships enjoyed by others around.

I am further reminded that many like me when communicating via the internet, or working with me on the Wards and in the community; and my long term clients simply love me to bits; but outside of this when it comes to more personal relationships or friendships I am completely helpless and socially inadequate so it is easy to return to the solace of self.

I am further reminded of a question once asked, am I a devotee or a nurse? I guess the right answer is I’m just a nurse; I guess simply because it makes one feel needed and you can make a difference to someone if only for a short time.

So I am saddened that my relationships with devotees appears strained, that I cannot endear them and bring something to the table; unwelcome and unwanted close to home; and in may ways too distant to be a part of the devotee community at the Temple I go to; and even more distant from my God Brothers who could have given me the dates in time for me to at least get to see my Guru Maharaja even once during his visit.

It days like today I sit in front of my deities for through everything they smile, sometimes frown, sometimes wink but always listen and keep me focused; so I guess Srila Prabhupada’s advice of deity worship for those living at home is the best safeguard; for if I listen to my mind it would be to simply give up and return into my protective shell; but each morning I see my beautiful deities I know it’s impossible.

And may be, just may be if I work on it, my relationships with the devotees will be like that of the one’s I sit and observe.

H.H. Devamrita Swami: The Biggest Festival: The Inside Story

If indeed the USA is the best democracy money can buy, then certainly Ukraine, the largest country wholly within Europe, is a democratic price-grabber's flea market. Open-air, unvarnished, the affairs of any level of government—judicial, legislative, or executive—are on sale, 24/7.

Slip your money under the vendor's table. Then watch the police, courts, hospitals, and universities wobble and totter your way. First-world visitors—from what are now known as the mature, industrial democracies—can't stomach this apparent mayhem.

Ukrainians, however, long reconciled to their system, often shrug it off as how life is in this world and as a form of wealth distribution that keeps everyone happy. If you want to get something done, it's only fair, they often say, that everyone in the food chain, from the lowest clerk to the top bureaucrat, gets a bite. And why not point your finger at those piggy American bankers, who plunged the world into the Global Financial Crisis; yet how many have gone to prison?

During the Middle Ages, the territory of Ukraine was a mighty center of Slavic culture—before the Mongols poured in and eradicated the population. Seven centuries of constant strife followed, as neighboring European powers took turns pummeling and dissecting the phantom Ukrainian nation. Then in the 20th Century came Stalin, who made the Mongol hordes look like sugar babes.

Obsessed with collectivizing Ukraine's famed agrarian prowess, his policies of forced collectivization and land confiscation obliterated the food supply. Starvation, augmented by firing squads and mass exiles, decimated a land often considered Europe's greatest breadbasket. Historians, still arguing over the total death toll, estimate that at least 25% percent of Ukraine's population died in what is known as the Holodomor, or Ukrainian Holocaust.

In 2003 at the United Nations, 25 countries including Russia, Ukraine and United States signed a joint statement on the 70th anniversary of the Holodomor with the following preamble:

"In the former Soviet Union millions of men, women and children fell victims to the cruel actions and policies of the totalitarian regime. The Great Famine of 1932-1933 in Ukraine (Holodomor), took from 7 million to 10 million innocent lives and became a national tragedy for the Ukrainian people."

Now, however, the same perennially mauled territory is a chakra of eternal bhakti culture. Graced with over 8,000 devotees participating in over 120 ISKCON centers and formal congregational gatherings, Ukraine, though economically one of Europe's poorest countries, is exceedingly wealthy in devotional service.

The crown jewel of ISKCON's endeavors there is the annual weeklong festival, in September, on the Black Sea. It's theme: selfless devotional service, performed with no material motivation or gain. Amazingly, for its weeklong bhakti extravaganza, from early morning to late night, the festival charges no fee.

In 1996, when the festival began, 400 devotees attended. By 2002, the attendance had climbed to 1,800, as a yearly bevy of visiting international senior Vaishnavas led seminars and kirtans. Each devotee paid a fee, in addition to accommodation, and received a plastic wristband allowing access to seminars, kirtans, and prasada meals.

After the 2008 festival, however, HH Niranjana Swami, an ISKCON Governing Body Commissioner, suddenly changed that approach. Walking at 5am to mangal-arti, the day's first congregational chanting,  he noticed devotees, who couldn't afford the festival fees, stealthily trying to elude the devotee security-guards and clandestinely join the kirtan. Their sincere determination—to rise so early and participate in the predawn chanting—thoroughly moved his heart. Niranjana Swami began to rethink the festival's concepts.

Out went the festival fees and enforcers checking for wristbands, national secretary Acyuta-priya das explains. The new policy: "Come one, come all—we'll depend on Krishna and serve as many as show up." Moreover, no longer would festival staff members receive any remuneration for their herculean, marathon efforts—all devotional service would be completely voluntary offerings of bhakti.

Upon registration, devotees are informed that the cost for festival prasada and programs averages approximately $40 per head, but everyone can pay what they can or want, whether nothing, less, or more.

The 2011 festival, just concluded Sept. 15, officially recorded 6,000 devotees attending—easily ISKCON"s biggest devotee event. Mystically, the festive accounts balanced,  augmented by wealthy donors from both within Ukraine and abroad, inspired by the festival's bold spiritual vision and expert management.

How do you feed breakfast and lunch to more than 6,000 guests? Every day a different major temple in Ukraine takes responsibility for the massive cooking. To my delight, the veteran, senior international guests could opt for especially healthy cuisine—even amaranth, quinoa, and heaps of marinated ginger.

This year's international lineup of special guest speakers and kirtan leaders included HH Niranjana Swami, HH A.C. Bhaktivaibhava Swami, HH Prabhavishnu Swami, HH Indradyumna Swami, HH Prahladananda Swami, HH Bhakti Vijnana Goswami, HH Devamrita Swami, HG Bada Hari das, HG Yadubara das, HG Ganesh das, HG Dhanesvara das, HG Navina Nirada das, HG Caitanya Candra Charan das, HG Madhava das, HG Sarvatma das, and HG Devaki dasi.

Extending the festival's policy of donate what you can from the heart, the huge festival gift shop decided to go the same route. Devotees could walk into the shop, pick out any devotional paraphernalia or clothing, and pay what they could or wanted. Amazingly the store turned a profit.

Whether from the registration donations or the gift shop, any surplus funds are directly plowed back into next year's festival. With attendance growing by over 1,000 per year, a delightful problem presses: where to find a tent and floor that facilitates at least 7,000 eager Srimad Bhagavatam hearers and jubilant Hare Krishna kirtan jumpers.
