YESTERDAY WAS THE GLORIOUS DISAPPEARANCE DAY OF SRILA JIVA GOSVAMI:

SRILA JIVA GOSVAMI

The son of Śrī Vallabha and nephew of Śrī Sanatana, Śrī Rūpa, all of whom were employed in the service of the Badsa Hussain Shah. Having been rewarded richly by the Badsa for their devices, their household life was very opulent.

In the Gaura-gaṇoddeśa-dīpikā (195) it is said that Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī was formerly Vilāsa-mañjarī gopī. From his very childhood Jīva Gosvāmī was greatly fond of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam

He later came to Navadvīpa to study Sanskrit, and, following in the footsteps of Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu, he circumambulated the entire Navadvīpa-dhāma. After visiting Navadvīpa-dhāma he went to Benares to study Sanskrit under Madhusūdana Vācaspati, and after finishing his studies in Benares he went to Vṛndāvana and took shelter of his uncles, Śrī Rūpa and Sanātana. This is described in the Bhakti-ratnākara.

When Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu came to Ramakeli, Śrī Jiva was blessed by having darsana of His worshipable Lord, though he was just a baby at the time. Mahaprabhu indicated him to be a great future scholar in the Gaudiya sampradaya. Though he was only a child, Śrī Jiva would meditate on Śrī Caitanya constantly.

Later on, when his father and uncles renounced their family life in order to be with Mahaprabhu, the only child,  Śrī Jiva, was left with his mother in the family palace at Fateyabad. Jiva missed them greatly and whenever he would remember his father and uncles, or Śrī Caitanya he would lose consciousness and fall to the ground.

As he got a little older, Śrī Jīva took up the worship of the Deities of  Śrī-Śrī Rama-Krishna. He would carefully decorate Them and offer bhoga and aroti, serving Them with his full attention. Even in his play, whatever games he played were connected with Śrī Krishna's pastimes. While studying under the local panditas he became proficient in grammar, poetry and rhetoric. His teachers noted his great intellect.

Seeing that Jiva had quickly become conversant with the conclusion of  Śrīmad-Bhagavatam,  Śrī Rūpa engaged him in proof-reading his Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu. At this time Śrī Jiva compiled a commentary on Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu called Durgama-sangamani. Śrī Sanatana Gosvami compiled Śrī Vaisnava-tosani, a commentary on the tenth canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam, which he gave to Śrī Jiva for proof-reading. Under the order of Śrī Sanatana, Śrī Jiva compiled a commentary on that named Laghu Vaisnava-tosani. His writings, along with those of Śrī Rūpa and Śrī Sanatana, Śrī Gopal Bhatta, Sri Raghunatha Bhatta, Śrī Raghunatha Dasa, Śrī Krsna Dasa, Śrī Kasisvar Paṇḍita, and Śrī Madhu Paṇḍita, completely captivated the learned men of that time.

While Jīva Gosvāmī was alive, Śrīmatī Jāhnavī-devī, the pleasure potency of Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu, went to Vṛndāvana with a few devotees. Jīva Gosvāmī was very kind to the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas, the Vaiṣṇavas from Bengal. Whoever went to Vṛndāvana he provided with a residence and prasādam.

After the disappearance of Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī and Sanātana Gosvāmī in Vṛndāvana, Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī became the ācārya of all the Vaiṣṇavas in Bengal, Orissa and the rest of the world, and it is he who used to guide them in their devotional service.

In Vṛndāvana he established the Rādhā-Dāmodara temple, where, after retirement, we had the opportunity to live from 1962 until 1965, when we decided to come to the United States of America. ( Śrīla Prabhupada's purport of CC Adi-lila 10.85)

When Jīva Gosvāmī was still present, Śrīla Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī compiled his famous Caitanya-caritāmṛta. Later, Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī inspired Śrīnivāsa Ācārya, Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura and Duḥkhī Kṛṣṇadāsa to preach Kṛṣṇa consciousness in Bengal.

He established that the Yamuna is more glorious than the Ganga as the Ganga emanates from Krishna's lotus feet whereas the Yamuna is His own consort...

Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī left his body in 1618 in Vrindavana.
