July 13 Wicklow Dear Friends, “I can think of chanting steadfastly for so many years without gaining a higher taste, without even chanting with much attention. That’s humbling in itself. It’s also humbling to put our speculation aside and fully accept, with faith, that the holy names are Krishna Himself. “As Prabhupada used to say, [...]

Spiritual Scientist: Our fear of insignificance traps us in insignificance

The Bhagavad-gita (18.58) urges us to harmonize our desires with Krishna’s desires and to put aside all other desires, recognizing them to be what they are: the false ego’s allurements. However, when we identify too strongly with our false ego, then we mistake its desires to be our own desires. This misidentification may make casting those desires aside seem like giving up our own individuality, like making ourselves insignificant.

But actually this fear of insignificance is what traps us in insignificance. If we unsentimentally contemplate on the false ego’s desires, we will realize that the fulfillment of those desires will yield insignificant results; at best we might get some fleeting, unfulfilling pleasure that will keep us bound to the insignificant material existence like zillions of other living entities. As long as we stay wedded to those desires, we seal our pact with insignificance.

If we can somehow endure the feelings of insignificance induced while casting aside the false ego’s desires and accept Krishna’s desires as our own, then his mercy empowers us to pass over all obstacles and render significant service that pleases him, benefits the world and delivers us to his own abode, where we delight forever in a life of ultimate significance: the life of everlasting love.

H.H. Devamrita Swami: Bhakti Heartaches

"We are all joined together at the hip," my dear Godbrother Vaisesika Prabhu likes to say. Bhakti-yoga is a social affair—practitioners of various levels thronging together for mutual support and upliftment. So what if someone has a personal train wreck, falls down. Or, even worse, suddenly completely disappears into illusion? We all feel the pain, shock, and for neophytes, doubts haunt the mind: "If he or she had problems, then what about me . . . who am I to think I can continue successfully, if even he or she capsized . . . ."

Especially when older, or even senior practitioners drive off the road and overturn, budding devotees often wonder, "What's going on, with the process and with my own practice?"

For me, I feel for the causualites—whether young devotees or old, whether their demise is short term or long. I can feel the vise of illusion squeezing them. I can see the jaws of material nature wrapping around them, its teeth ready to pierce and grind them.

I grieve immensely.

Then, taking shelter of the bhagavat philosophy, I eventually stabilize.

Bhakti-yogis have both a heart and a head. Ideally, they should work in unison.

As Srila Prabhupada said when confronted with the first exits by initiated devotees during the early days of his outreach, 1968,  after expressing sadness: "It is not wonderful that Krishna-devi has left (more on that situation perhaps later). What is wonderful is that we are able to stay and serve Krishna. The maya is so strong. It is Krishna's divine energy. And for someone to actually stay engaged in Krishna's service is very rare. The living entity is practically helpless under the sway ofmaya's power and can only cry out to Krishna for help. But we have to pray at every moment that the power of maya does not disturb us."

Let's cry out together, constantly, forever: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

H.H. Kadamba Kanana Swami: Freedom from what?

(Kadamba Kanana Swami, Dec 2011, Sasolburg, Johannesburg, South Africa)

In religious tradition we find many values that are restricting interactions between men and women. Or restricting foodstuffs, consummation of alcohol, drugs – all of these things are governed by religious tradition. But there is logic to it, because there are also problems with these things. This is what we see, that when these things are becoming very prominent, then it gets into a huge mess! I mean if one’s own son becomes severely addicted to drugs, then you cannot even have him in your house anymore, since he will steal everything that is there. That is what will happen and everyone knows that it gets like that. What to speak of all the violence and other things that are relating to something more socially accepted, such as alcohol!

So many spiritual traditions in the world are either forbidding or restricting these things, because they obviously bring problems in life! So there are regulative principles. The Vedic scriptures – the Bhagavad-Gita (which is one of the Vedic scriptures) is saying that it is introducing the regulative principles of freedom. All these regulations that are there, are not actually meant to suffocate people. A lot of people from all over the world have turned away from religion because they were tired from all these narrow suffocating ideas, and they just want to be natural:

‘I just want to be natural!’

That tendency is there in the modern world…it’s everywhere. It doesn’t matter whether it is in Bombay…New York… Johannesburg…Paris or London, since it’s all the same thing. The churches, temples and other religious buildings are empty due to people wanting to be free and natural. That is fine, but the Bhagavad-Gita is saying that these restrictions are the regulative principles of freedom. Freedom from what? Doesn’t look very free at all! Not allowed to do anything. Not allowed to drink or smoke…………….. With so many restrictions, how can we call that the regulative principles of freedom? Yes they are called the regulative principles of freedom, because they set us free from suffering – that is the essence of it!

Year Finishing

Vaughan, Ontario

The real trekking for today was the round trip (on foot) from the ashram to Toronto's old city hall and back. Purpose? I went to take part in what proves to be one of the most exciting chanting sessions of the year - the New Year's countdown. Unique about this kirtan is that dozens of people take the 3.5 km trek back to the ashram after chanting with the rest of us. We arrived after a 3 hour chanting, in other words, 3 AM in the morning. An unforgettable party!

Three outreach New Year's Eve programs preceded the countdown and all were sweet.

I can't resist taking an exerpt from the book, "Surprises Around the Bend" and sharing it. On Mother Theresa: "In 1948 she arrived in the slums of Calcutta, but she was still not sure she had made the right decision. Could she really identify with these people? After praying for God's ugidance, she formulated a plan to walk through the slums and see what would happen. She quoted: 'I walked and walked all the time, until I couldn't walk anymore. Then I understood better the exhaustion of the really poor, always in search of a little food, of medicines, of everything.'

"That specific walk proved to be pivotal in resolving whether or not to accept the promptings of her heart. Yes, she could live like the people she sought to help. Though she had no shelter, no money, no employment, no security, somehow she believed God would provide."

Congo Woman and Bats

Toronto, Ontario

We hit a cold snap so when I took that evening trek south on Avenue Road you could feel it. With wind chill it registered at 20 degrees Celsius below zero.

A woman asked for the Bay subway station. She was lost. I then diverted from the route I was to take in order to see that she would find her place. It's a service I could do. I relayed to her that I live in the Krishna temple up the street. I asked her where she was from.

"From the Congo."
"You must find this weather interesting?" I asked.
"Yes, it's cold. So you believe in the Lord?"
"I certainly do," I affirmed. "There's no other way! And you?"
"Yes, I depend on the Lord, I can't live without Him."

As she said this I thought that one advantage of extreme cold is that it forces dependency so it can't be all that bad. Taking the old saying, "If you have to live with it, you might as well love it", takes on a powerful meaning at such times. With this simple circumstance of winds whipping in from the north I had made a friend. I was able to be of some service. The woman from the Congo was ever so thankful to reach the Bay Station.

Now for enthusiasts of the winter airs, check out YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJjn16jowwk&feature=share

Hundreds of bats swirled in the air on midnight at Dundas Square. We were at our spot, chanting away in the midst of party animalism, when above us in the sky an influx of Batman bhaktas (devotees) came in to welcome the New year.

Happy 2012! Hare Krishna!

One But Not One

Toronto, Ontario

Someone remarked that the creatures in flight on New Year's Eve were starlings and not bats. That makes more sense. It was quite spectacular nevertheless, seeing flocks in formations above the chanting party. It was awesome.

Somehow we are all fundamentally the same, whether mammal or feathered friend. We have the same physical constituents of earth, water, fire, air and ether, regardless of different body types. In essence we all have variant DNA. By constitution the spiritual DNA for all of us in Sanskrit is called sat, chit, and ananda, which means eternity, knowledge and happiness. Such is what the Vedas teach. We are not these bodies but spirits that are permanent, always were, are now and always will be. We are sat.

Secondly, we are cognizant, meaning we are intuitive, aware, conscious, beyond the dullness of matter. We are chit.

Lastly, we are by nature blissful. Certainly we are in utter search for this feature, groping about trying to find happiness through a perverse attempt with matter. Deep within though, we are happy. We are ananda.

We are sat, chit and ananda, but in this mundane world have become covered over by viscous modes. While we share these three constituents, still there exists some scope for individuatlity despite the commonality. In other words the oneness and distinction within us, runs parallel. We have this unity-and-diversity concept wrapped up in one.

Whether starlings, bats, rats, pigs, cats, dogs, humans, etc., all are denominations that are common while a differentiation persists, simultaneously.

Om Tat Sat.

What He Wants

Toronto, Ontario

Good Samaritan? I don't know. I was trying to be what I believe my guru, Srila Prabhuapda wants me to be - helpful.

I took that evening much needed walk. I was south bound on Yonge Street when I saw a woman struggling terribly with lugging baggage on the sidewalk. It was a large duffel bag on tiny wheels which was reeling all over the place. I offered to help. She accepted. She was a Korean woman (the other day I met a Congo woman who was in distress).

"Where are you going?" I asked.
"Down the street." It ended up being a good 1.5 kilometres. I strapped the bag over my shoulder. It was medium heavy. She was curious about my spiritual and monastic life, about the term "Hare Krishna", about the Gita and the philosophy. She had a hard time accepting the concept of the soul being in bodies other than humans.

"There's no essential difference between humans and other creatures, even insects. We all eat, sleep, mate and defend. The soul, the living force is in everything," I explained.
"Oh, just one minute!" she said excitedly and rushed into a grocery store. I waited for a good five minutes, chanting on my beads. She came out and we proceeded to her building. She ended up being most appreciative. She then explained the reason for the cargo and the additional groceries.

"I'm leaving for Orland tomorrow at noon, by bus. I'm going there to get married and in the bag you carried is my wedding dress. Thank you so much."

"Congratulations!" She said she'll contact me after the wedding and honeymoon to learn more about what I believe.

I'll tell you readers what I believe. I believe I might be the first monk in history to carry a woman's wedding gown. I do think nothing of it though. I believe my guru would want me to be helpful.

H.H. Kadamba Kanana Swami: Sankirtana festival in Simhachalam

After his short stay in Munich, Kadamba Kanana Maharaja left to a farm-project near Passau in Germany. This is the place where Lord Nrsimhadeva resides and it is very fittingly called Simhachalam. It’s the venue for the yearly Sankirtana Festival which attracts dedicated Sankirtana devotees from all over Europe to gather. The festival is a celebration of the success of the December book marathon that goes on in the middle of a bitterly cold winter.

Upon arrival at the farm, we were welcomed by half a meter of snow which was a rather sobering experience remembering that we just flew in from hot South Africa. Anyway, it seemed that the colder it was the more fiery the kirtanas became.

Every year, the festival consists of amazing Guru Pujas and Gaura Aratis (brahmacaris going mad dancing in ecstasy), inspiring and fired-up Sankirtana classes (Kadamba Kanana Maharaja told the story of how he was distributing books in hospitals in the old days) and wonderful bhajanas that continued from the evening to Mangala Arati the next morning.

And of course there was Nrsimhadeva! Hour-long abhishek ceremonies, maha-prasadam flying through the temple room, wonderful outfits and lots of prayers to glorify the Lord in His furious form!

All in all, once again it was a wonderful festival and a worthwhile visit!

BG 2.7: Now I am confused about my duty and have lost all composure because of miserly weakness.
(Pocket Vedas | Online)
CC adi 7.1: Let me first offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who is the ultimate goal of life for one bereft of all possessions in this material world and is the only meaning for one advancing in spiritual life. Thus let me write about His magnanimous contribution of devotional service in love of God.
(Pocket Vedas | Online)
CC madhya 8.128: “Whether one is a brāhmaṇa, a sannyāsī or a śūdra — regardless of what he is — he can become a spiritual master if he knows the science of Kṛṣṇa.”
(Pocket Vedas | Online)
SB 1.1.1: O my Lord, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, son of Vasudeva, O all-pervading Personality of Godhead, I offer my respectful obeisances unto You. I meditate upon Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa because He is the Absolute Truth and the primeval cause of all causes of the creation, sustenance and destruction of the manifested universes. He is directly and indirectly conscious of all manifestations, and He is independent because there is no other cause beyond Him. It is He only who first imparted the Vedic knowledge unto the heart of Brahmājī, the original living being. By Him even the great sages and demigods are placed into illusion, as one is bewildered by the illusory representations of water seen in fire, or land seen on water. Only because of Him do the material universes, temporarily manifested by the reactions of the three modes of nature, appear factual, although they are unreal. I therefore meditate upon Him, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is eternally existent in the transcendental abode, which is forever free from the illusory representations of the material world. I meditate upon Him, for He is the Absolute Truth.
(Pocket Vedas | Online)
CC adi 7.104: “Dear Caitanya Mahāprabhu,” they said, “to tell You the truth, we are greatly pleased to hear Your words, and furthermore Your bodily features are so pleasing that we feel extraordinary satisfaction in seeing You.
(Pocket Vedas | Online)
BS 5.1: Kṛṣṇa who is known as Govinda is the Supreme Godhead. He has an eternal blissful spiritual body. He is the origin of all. He has no other origin and He is the prime cause of all causes.
(Pocket Vedas | Online)
SB 3.24.9: Brahmā, the first-born living being, went along with Marīci and other sages to the place of Kardama’s hermitage, which was surrounded by the River Sarasvatī.
(Pocket Vedas | Online)
SB 3.24.12: Lord Brahmā said: My dear son Kardama, since you have completely accepted my instructions without duplicity, showing them proper respect, you have worshiped me properly. Whatever instructions you took from me you have carried out, and thereby you have honored me.
(Pocket Vedas | Online)
SB 3.24.18: Lord Brahmā then told Devahūti: My dear daughter of Manu, the same Supreme Personality of Godhead who killed the demon Kaiṭabha is now within your womb. He will cut off all the knots of your ignorance and doubt. Then He will travel all over the world.
(Pocket Vedas | Online)
SB 3.25.2: Śaunaka continued: There is no one who knows more than the Lord Himself. No one is more worshipable or more mature a yogī than He. He is therefore the master of the Vedas, and to hear about Him always is the actual pleasure of the senses.
(Pocket Vedas | Online)

16 Rounds to Samadhi Magazine, LA, USA: Measuring Sacred Things In The Units of Capital

It is now impossible to exist, for any significant amount of time, in any geographical location on this planet without having to pay someone, because the whole planet has been converted into capital. Capitalism is a philosophy, a conviction by the power of which everything that is otherwise sacred gets converted into capital.

One ISKCON.com: The Sports Gamble – Part Two

By His Holiness Danavir Goswami: What a surprise! What a pleasant surprise! Srila Prabhupada’s conception of recreation is Lord Caitanya’s sankirtana movement. Kevala ananda khanda, this process is simply joyful. Every single drop of the ever-expanding, blissful, ocean of devotional service is total recreation; from rising up early in the morning, to japa, to prasadam, to cleaning, to distributing books to managing centers. Isn’t this what attracted us to become devotees? That everything in relationship to serving Krsna is transcendental and joyfully performed? Chanting, dancing and feasting, the famous Lord Caitanya formula for happiness.

By Krishna Dharma Das for www.bhaktivedantamanor.co.uk on 5 Jan 2012

With the arrival of another new year many of us will be girding our loins and making firm resolutions that this will be the year of change. Reforming ourselves is not easy when it involves hardship. We might also undergo austerity when it will bring a future pay off.

Yoga of Ecology, Bhakta Chris, USA: In Solar Power, India Begis Living Up To Its Own Ambitions

Kuni Takahashi for The New York Times
Every five days or so, workers wipe down each of the 36,000 solar panels at the Azure Solar Plant in Khadoda, India.

KHADODA, India — Solar power is a clean energy source. But in this arid part of northwest India it can also be a dusty one.

Every five days or so, in a marriage of low and high tech, field hands with long-handled dust mops wipe down each of the 36,000 solar panels at a 63-acre installation operated by Azure Power. The site is one of the biggest examples of India’s ambitious plan to use solar energy to help modernize its notoriously underpowered national electricity grid, and reduce its dependence on coal-fired power plants.

Azure Power has a contract to provide solar-generated electricity to a state-government electric utility. Inderpreet Wadhwa, Azure’s chief executive, predicted that within a few years solar power would be competitive in price with India’s conventionally generated electricity.

“The efficiency of solar technology will continue to increase, and with the increasing demand in solar energy, cost will continue to decrease,” Mr. Wadhwa said.

Two years ago, Indian policy makers said that by the year 2020 they would drastically increase the nation’s use of solar power from virtually nothing to 20,000 megawatts — enough electricity to power the equivalent of up to 15 million modern American homes during daylight hours when the panels are at their most productive. Many analysts said it could not be done. But, now the doubters are taking back their words.

Dozens of developers like Azure, because of aggressive government subsidies and a large drop in the global price of solar panels, are covering India’s northwestern plains — including this village of 2,000 people — with gleaming solar panels. So far, India uses only about 140 megawatts, including 10 megawatts used by the Azure installation, which can provide enough power to serve a town of 50,000 people, according to the company. But analysts say that the national 20,000 megawatt goal is achievable and that India could reach those numbers even a few years before 2020.

“Prices came down and suddenly things were possible that didn’t seem possible,” said Tobias Engelmeier, managing director of Bridge to India, a research and consulting firm based in New Delhi. Chinese manufacturers like Suntech Power and Yingli Green Energy helped drive the drop in solar panel costs. The firms increased production of the panels and cut costs this year by about 30 percent to 40 percent, to less than $1 a watt.

Developers of solar farms in India, however, have shown a preference for the more advanced, so-called thin-film solar cells offered by suppliers in the United States, Taiwan and Europe. The leading American provider to India is First Solar, based in Tempe, Ariz.

India does not have a large solar manufacturing industry, but is trying to develop one and China is showing a new interest in India’s growing demand. China’s Suntech Power sold the panels used at the Azure installation, which opened in June.

Industry executives credit government policies with India’s solar boom, unusual praise because businesses usually deride Indian regulations as Kafkaesque.

Over the last decade, India has opened the state-dominated power-generating industry to private players, while leaving distribution and rate-setting largely in government hands. European countries heavily subsidize solar power by agreeing to buy it for decades at a time, but the subsidies in India are lower and solar operators are forced into to greater competition, helping push down costs.

This month, the government held its second auction to determine the price at which its state-owned power trading company — NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam — would buy solar-generated electricity for the national grid. The average winning bid was 8.77 rupees (16.5 cents) per kilowatt hour.

That is about twice the price of coal-generated power, but it was about 27 percent lower than the winning bids at the auction held a year ago. Germany, the world’s biggest solar-power user, pays about 17.94 euro cents (23 American cents) per kilowatt hour.

India still significantly lags behind European countries in the use of solar. Germany, for example, had 17,000 megawatts of solar power capacity at the end of 2010. But India, which gets more than 300 days of sunlight a year, is a more suitable place to generate solar power. And being behind is now benefiting India, as panel prices plummet, enabling it to spend far less to set up solar farms than countries that pioneered the technology.

Madhavendra Puri, New Govardhana, AU: I Am Krsna's Toy

Krsna!  I have no idea what I am doing in this life.  All my plans are based around my senses, thus they are whimsical and dismayed.  Why don’t You take a tighter grip on me?  Why am I so resilient?

Recently I am turning to see Your smiling face, tinged with the sense of spiritual deceit.  You deceive me almost every day and You simply laugh about it.  You like to play with me like I am Your toy and You feel no moral wrongs with this.

Krsna, let me remain Your toy and please continue to bring me in.  I am squirming but I am smiling.  You’re doing such wonders and I love to observe them.  I long for the day that I may lay my ego aside and bow to You with full humility.  Please don’t let me forget You.

Aspiring to serve Your servants, Madhavendra Puri dasa.
